Frequently Asked
Questions
About Compounded Medications
What are compounded medications?
Compounded medications are customized prescription products that are prepared by a licensed compounding pharmacy for an individual patient.
They may be created when a commercially available medication is not suitable, unavailable, or requires a specific strength, dosage form, or ingredient adjustment as determined by a prescriber.
Each compounded medication is made according to a provider’s prescription and tailored to meet a patient’s unique clinical needs.
Are compounded medications FDA-approved?
No. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved.
At Southend Pharmacy, compounded prescriptions are prepared by our FDA-registered, state-licensed 503A compounding pharmacy using FDA-approved active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from vetted suppliers.
Compounding is permitted when a licensed prescriber determines that:
- A commercially available medication is not clinically appropriate for a specific patient, or
- A product is not reasonably available (such as during drug shortages).
Each compounded medication is prepared specifically for an individual patient based on the prescriber’s directions.
What can compounded medications be used for?
Compounded medications may be used by prescribers to support various individual patient needs, such as adjustments in dose, form, ingredients, or tolerability.
They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and use must be based on a prescriber’s clinical judgment and evaluation of a patient’s health history.

Ordering & Shipping
How long does it take to receive my medication?
Most compounded prescriptions are processed, prepared, and shipped within 3–5 business days after we receive a complete and valid prescription.
Timeframes may vary depending on prescription volume, ingredient availability, and verification requirements.
How is the medication shipped?
Temperature-sensitive medications are shipped using the appropriate insulation and cold packs to maintain stability during transit.
Please follow the storage instructions provided with your shipment.
How do I request a refill?
Refills for compounded medications require a new prescription, unless your original prescription includes authorized refills.
Your provider may need to reassess your therapy before issuing additional prescriptions.
Insurance & Costs
Are compounded medications covered by insurance?
Most insurance plans do not cover compounded medications. Many patients choose to use HSA or FSA funds, depending on their specific plan rules.
Southend Pharmacy offers transparent pricing and can review costs with you before your order is prepared.
Do I Qualify
How do I know if a compounded medication is appropriate for me?
A licensed prescriber must evaluate your medical history, current medications, and health goals to determine whether a compounded option is appropriate.
Southend pharmacists are available to answer general medication-related questions but cannot diagnose conditions or make prescribing decisions.
Can I switch from a commercial product to a compounded version?
Possibly — but only if your prescriber authorizes the change.
Depending on the prescribed formulation, your provider may adjust dosing or discuss differences between the commercial and compounded versions.
Our team can support your provider with product information to ensure a smooth transition.
What if I experience side effects?
Some medications may cause side effects depending on the formulation and individual response.
If you experience severe or persistent symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Our pharmacists can answer general questions about your medication but cannot provide clinical diagnoses or treatment recommendations.
